How to Handle an Interview in Chinese

Today’s topic is 面试 miànshì

When you entered a company for an interview, the first person you will most likely to speak to is got to be the receptionist. Here is what you can say to them to explain the purpose of your visit:

nǐ hǎo, wǒ jiào shì lái miànshì de
你 好!  我 叫 X X, 是 来 面 试 的。

Hello! I am XX,  and I am here for an interview.

hé wáng zǒng yuēle jīntiān xiàwǔ sān diǎn
和王总约了今天下午三点.

I’ve arranged it with Mr. Wang at 3 O’clock this afternoon

*Note that any person in a senior position usually in a higher position than you, or similar position as you, can be called 总 zǒng. For example, a manager, a boss, or a CEO. We can see from here the cultural differences between the East and the West. In the west, equality is being valued highly, so the word ‘MR’  is used for people from all level. In Chinese culture, however, hierarchy and respect are being valued highly, therefore people in a higher position need to be treated with respect and be addressed differently.

Now, let’s look at some sample answers for 5 top interview questions:
