My fellow Mandarin Chinese pirate ship memeber @thecodezealot felt that he often get confused of the different meanings of 让 ràng.
Here, Chelsea has put together the 3 major meaning of 让 to help you conquer this topical character.
1. When 让 means ‘to let’, ‘to allow’
ràng wǒ kǎo lǜ kǎo lǜ
让我考虑考虑 Let me think about it
Ràng tā shì shì kàn
让他试试看 Let him have a go
Mā ma bú ràng wǒ chū mén
妈妈不让我出门 Mum wouldn’t let me go out.
2. When 让 means to ‘take a step back’, ‘make allowance’
qǐng gěi lǎo、luò、bìng、cán、yùn fù jí bào xiǎo hái de chéng kè ràng zuò
谦让 To show humility, to be considerate (e.g. to your siblings and cousins)
退让 tuì ràng to take a step back
忍让 rěn ràng to tolerate
让位 ràng wèi to give up your crown/position (e.g. CEO 让位 to his/her shareholder); also can be the formal version of 让座 ràng zuò（to give up your seat to others)
3. For business matters, e.g. to sell, and to transfer
出让 chū ràng to sell (to give away) your property
转让 zhuǎn ràng to transfer (or again to give away your property to someone else)
