The word 比较bǐ jiào has the meaning of ‘in comparison to, relatively’, however instead of comparing A to B, 比较 is more often used to compare A to a general idea.
zhè bēi shuǐ bǐ jiào tàng
这杯水比较烫
This cup of water is relatively hot.
xióng xiān shēng bǐ jiào cōng míng
熊 先 生 比 较 聪 明
Mr Bear is relatively smart
Jīn tiān de fàn bǐ jiào xiāng
今天的饭比较香
The rice today is relatively tasty
zhè ge xī guā bǐ jiào tián
这个西瓜比较甜
zhè jiàn shì qíng bǐ jiào fù zá
这件事情比较复杂
This matter is relatively complicated.
zhè tái shǒu jī bǐ jiào guì
这台手机比较贵
This mobile phone is relatively expensive
We also use the word the lot in situations when we are trying to give suggestions or to express our opinions, but do not want to sound too intrusive, the word 比较 is then come into help to smooth the tones:
wǒ jué de zhè yàng zuò bǐ jiào hǎo
我觉得这样做比较好
I think it is better to do it this way.
zhè ge yán sè bǐ jiào bú shì hé nǐ
这个颜色比较不适合你
The colour doesn’t suit you very well
zhè yàng zuò bǐ jiào kuài
这 样 做 比 较 快
It is faster to do it this way
