The Chinese Character 让

My fellow Mandarin Chinese pirate ship memeber @thecodezealot felt that he often get confused of the different meanings of 让 ràng.

Here, Chelsea has put together the 3 major meaning of 让 to help you conquer this topical character.

1. When 让 means ‘to let’, ‘to allow’

ràng wǒ kǎo lǜ kǎo lǜ

让我考虑考虑 Let me think about it

Ràng tā shì shì kàn

让他试试看 Let him have a go

Mā ma bú ràng wǒ chū mén

妈妈不让我出门 Mum wouldn’t let me go out.

2. When 让 means to ‘take a step back’, ‘make allowance’

qǐng gěi lǎo、luò、bìng、cán、yùn fù jí bào xiǎo hái de chéng kè ràng zuò

请给老、弱、病、残、孕妇及抱小孩的乘客让座。

qiān ràng

谦让   To show humility, to be considerate (e.g. to your siblings and cousins)

退让 tuì ràng to take a step back

忍让 rěn ràng to tolerate

让位 ràng wèi to give up your crown/position (e.g. CEO 让位 to his/her shareholder); also can be the formal version of 让座 ràng zuò(to give up your seat to others)

3. For business matters, e.g. to sell, and to transfer

出让 chū ràng to sell (to give away) your property

转让 zhuǎn ràng to transfer (or again to give away your property to someone else)
